Individual Therapy
As a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), I sometimes get asked if I do much individual therapy. I can understand the question. It may be assumed that the prime focus of an MFT is to work with the M’s and the F’s in the description. However, the reality is, though I clock a lot of hours working with couples, more than half my practice is spent working with individuals.
As an MFT, I’m trained to work with individuals as a primary treatment. It is not an afterthought. I’m trained to use a systems approach within my individual work, which I find to be a robust treatment model that fosters good results.

Common issues I work with in
individual therapy:
- Generalized Anxiety – Helping clients manage persistent worry, overthinking, and physical symptoms of anxiety to regain a sense of control.
- Social Anxiety – Building confidence in social interactions, reducing fear of judgment, and improving communication skills.
- Depression & Bipolar Depression – Addressing mood fluctuations, feelings of hopelessness, and energy changes while developing coping strategies.
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – Providing tools (including Exposure & Response Prevention) to faze out rituals/safety-behaviors and manage intrusive thoughts.
- Parenting Concerns – Assisting parents in managing challenges, strengthening their approach, and fostering positive family dynamics.
- Relationship Concerns solo work (Friends, Family, Romantic, Co-Worker) – It isn’t always feasible to get two people into therapy to address the relationship. I also help individuals who want to do their part to improve communication, set better boundaries, and foster healthy connections.
- Self-Esteem, Self-Worth & Identity Concerns – Guiding clients in developing self-acceptance, confidence, and a stronger sense of identity.
- Stress Management – Teaching techniques to navigate daily stressors, improve resilience, and prevent burnout.
- Anger Management – Helping clients recognize triggers, regulate emotions, and express anger in healthier ways.
- Grief Counseling – Supporting individuals through loss, whether due to death, life transitions, or other significant changes.
